This is a tool for making long, unwieldy URLs easier to share. It also allows you to track click-through traffic on shortened URLs.
Browser button
Add this bookmark to your browser's toolbar and click it whenever you want to shorten the current address: url(x)Firefox keyword shortcut
If you use Firefox you can shorten URLs from your address bar. The advantage of this method, over the Browser Button, is that you can use it without your hands leaving the keyboard. Just press Command-L (Mac) or Ctrl-L (Windows) to select the current URL, add "urlx " to the front and press enter. Shazam!
How to set up Firefox keyword shortcut
Step 1
Bookmark http://urlx.org/. You can do this by clicking on the star icon in the right-most part of the address bar:
Note: If you don't see a star icon, you're probably not running Firefox 3. You should upgrade!
Step 2
Click on the menu Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks and select the bookmark you just created (it will probably be in the Unsorted Bookmarks section).Step 3
Click on the More button to reveal additional options.Step 4
Change the Location to http://urlx.org/?x=%s
Step 5
Set the bookmark's Keyword to urlx
Done!
You can close the Bookmark Manager. Now if you prepend "urlx " (with a space) to the current address you'll get a shortened version of it:
